Fulton
Fulton, Missouri: Fulton has an excellent public school system. The colleges and institutions of the entire County of Callaway truly contribute greatly towards the cultural enrichment of the area. There is an abundance of performance and visual arts innovations. There are also a variety of museums to peruse, displaying everything from the most serious of history and art subjects to the whimsical display of antique cars.

One of the most well noted sights and pleasurable ways to spend time in Fulton is by indulging in the gorgeous Stinson Creek Trail. Running throughout the city, this 4.4 mile paved trail follows the creek through streets and wooded areas of the city. There are more than a dozen access points with which one can swiftly get to the trail. Several important landmarks such as the Covered Bridge, located just west of Business 54, and the railroad bridge, crossing Stinson Creek near Brookside Drive, are must-see gems along the path. You can jog, walk, bike or hike your way throughout this stunning trail.

Fulton has a rich history which influences the people and the culture to this day. The city was founded in 1825 but it wasn’t until 1859 that it was fully incorporated. Most of the first residents were rooted in southern culture. Slavery was brought into the country and the economy swiftly became based on agriculture.

Fulton was put into the national spotlight by Henry Bellamann’s novel King’s Row, which later became a popular movie. Henry Bellamann was born, raised and college educated in Fulton. Although King’s Row was set in a fictional town, Fulton was the model it was largely based on. The individuals and situations in the plot much resembled that of Fulton. Ronald Reagan starred in the 1940 film production of the story, and much of the memorabilia from the film can be found on display at local museums.

In 1946, then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill came to Fulton to deliver his famous Iron Curtain speech at Westminster College, a private liberal arts college. To commemorate this historic event, the Winston Churchill Memorial and Library was dedicated on the campus. The Churchill Memorial is also the site where Mikhail Gorbachev delivered a speech in 1992 declaring the end of the Cold War. The Memorial itself is housed inside the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, a 12th century church from London that was redesigned by Sir Christopher Wren in 1667 and relocated to Fulton. The church houses an impressive amount of artifacts and information that relates to Churchill’s life and experiences. Visitors may come here to learn more about Churchill, take part in cultural events and services, or even hold their nuptials within the church.
